General Elections and By -Elections in Malaysia

Malaysia is a country that practices the concept of democracy, so elections are often held for the people to decide and elect a new leader who is qualified to be the prime minister, since 1975 Malaysia still maintains the same political system until now, where the party won the majority a seat in the lower house or state legislature can form a government.

Elections in Malaysia are divided into 2, namely general elections and by –elections General election, this election is held when the parliament or state assembly is dissolved or dissolved itself after a specified period of 5 years, this election is held simultaneously throughout Malaysia, different for Sabah and Sarawak general election for assembly and assembly state invitations are held separately, next is a by -election, this election is held when there is a vacancy in parliament or state assembly, this vacancy may occur due to death, resignation and dismissal, then the election will continue to be held immediately to fill the vacancy, it is held within 60 days for peninsular Malaysia and 90 days for Sabah Sarawak

The winner of the election will always be determined by a voter, to be a voter in the election, there are some conditions that must be met before voting in the election, a person must have his name on the electoral roll, aged 18 years and above, Resident and is not a resident of Malaysia, resides in any constituency or state assembly and can vote in one constituency only. Other than that to be a candidate also has the condition, the condition must be a Malaysian citizen, aged 21, resident in Malaysian, of sound mind, not bankrupt, does not hold work in civil service, and is not at fault by the courts

Furthermore, the difference between general election and by -election is, general election is held is intended to elect members of the lower house and state assembly, the objective held is to establish the old government or change the government with general election, representative election is for full term , while for by -elections the difference is that this election will only be held if there is his death or resignation in the lower house or state assembly, the election of representatives is for the remainder of the term

In conclusion, the reasons why elections are so important for our country and the people need to get involved in this electoral process is because, elections are the responsibility of the people and it will ensure that we will be able to elect a credible government, maintain democratic practices and finally ensure administration going smoothly.
